Distillation columns are used to seperate substances from a liquid by evaporation and condensation. To do so, they require considerable amounts of heat (to create evaporation) and coolant (for condensation). The control challenge is to steer the heat and coolant inputs in the most efficient way.

Cokes furnaces are primarily producing cokes, for ironmaking. In this process, however, gasses are produced as well. It is important that the pressures in the furnaces are kept at target with minimal variations.

PID controlling gas pressure of feed to burner

This case concerns a PID controller that controls the gas pressure in a pipeline feeding gas to burners. Plant personnel were wondering if this control loop could be improved; they felt that the pressure took a long time to settle to setpoint; as a result, the heat input to the plant (which they control by adjusting the setpoint) was harder to control.
